Thane Over 10 bodies were recovered overnight from the wreckage of the crashed building in Bhiwandi city of Maharashtra. Relief rescue work continues even after 48 hours of the incident. The death toll in the accident has reached 35. Officials gave this information on Wednesday. This is the biggest accident in terms of deaths in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) during this monsoon season. An official of Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC) said, 10 other teenagers and teenagers under the age of 15 have been killed along with five infants, while 9 women and 11 men were among those who died.
In addition, 25 people have so far been rescued from the four-decade-old Jilani building at Patel compound in Narpoli. The building crashed around 3.45 am on Monday morning.
All the victims were sleeping in their homes during the incident. Local rescue teams and NDRF as well as dog squads saved the lives of more than two dozen people, and around 10 other injured were admitted to various hospitals.
The BNMC suspended two civic officers Sudham Jadhav and Dudhanath Yadav in connection with the accident late on Monday, while Narpoli police registered a criminal case against builder Syed Ahmed Jilani and others.
State Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde has ordered an inquiry into the accident of the building and earlier announced ex-gratia amount of Rs five lakh to the kin of the deceased and free medical treatment to the injured.
The minister said that another 102 buildings in the minority-dominated powerloom city have been declared ‘dangerous’ and all residents have been removed from the buildings as a precautionary measure.
This is the second major incident in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) in less than a month. Earlier, on August 24, an eight-year-old five-storey building located in the Tariq Garden in Mahad town of Raigad crashed, killing 16 people.
