Thiruvananthapuram. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s government in Kerala finally ordered a vigilance inquiry into the ‘Life Mission’ project on Wednesday, after nearly two months. For Vijayan, the Life Mission project has been his favorite project since he took office in 2016. It is about building houses for homeless and landless people using funds from sponsors and the role of the state government was to provide only land.
However, the project got into trouble when Congress MLA Anil Akkara of Vadakkancherry, Thrissur – first questioned about the wrongdoings in a building project in his constituency, which was approved by the UAE-based charity organization Red Crescent Fund Was given
Ever since Accra took up the matter, Vijayan has been defending, saying that the state government has no other role in the project other than handing over the land. But now, after the arrest of Swapna Suresh, the main accused of gold smuggling in Kerala by the NIA from Bengaluru in July and recovering Rs 1 crore from one of her lockers, things started to change. Doubts were also expressed on Binesh Kodiyeri, son of the CPI (M) state secretary, who was also questioned by the Enforcement Directorate, much more than what was being heard in the case.
This special project was carried out through the UAE Counsel, where Swapna and another arrested person, PS. Sarith used to work both. An interesting twist in the case came when the news came that state Industries Minister EP Jayarajan’s son was also close to Swapna. Speaking to the media, Akkara said that he was the first person who first raised this fraud and demanded justice from Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan.
Akkara said, “Despite repeated requests from the Congress for an inquiry, Vijayan has remained silent for a long time, I first approached the governor. Then, I wrote to the CBI and today Vijayan ordered a vigilance inquiry.” It is now known that the CBI is ready to investigate the matter. A vigilance probe is of no use as Vijayan himself is heading it. ”
Currently, Customs, NIA, ED and Income Tax are investigating gold smuggling, drug and life mission cases.
