Speaking in the Lok Sabha on a discussion under Rule 193 on the epidemic during the ongoing monsoon session, the Thiruvananthapuram MP also assured the youth of the country that the Parliament would remain with them and at the same time continue to argue for their good future.
Taking a dig at the government, Tharoor said the government had a chance to ‘hide its face’ in the crisis.
He said, “I urge this government to be more transparent in its functioning, such as collecting and releasing data for experts. Also consult with all stakeholders before taking any action and ultimately Taking the nation into confidence, because the country is losing faith in you. ”
Citing data from the World Health Organization (WHO), Tharoor said that on Saturday, 93,337 cases of coronavirus were reported in India, while 42,628 cases were reported in the US during the same period. Even in cases of deaths, the highest number of deaths are happening daily in India.
Speaking during the discussion, he said, “This is a painful truth of the time in which we live and keeps reminding us how important it is for us to take time out in this House and discuss this important issue.”
Describing what happened in the last six months across the country, MP Tharoor said that in January itself there were good signs.
Tharoor said, “.. As of January 30, the World Health Organization had declared the Kovid-19 virus as a public health emergency, an announcement that coincidentally came on the same day that the first case of coronavirus was reported in India. . ”
“When this government failed to give any concrete response to this epidemic, my colleague and member of this House Rahul Gandhi tweeted on 12 February and publicly warned the government that coronovirus is a very serious threat to our people . ”
Tharoor quoted Rahul Gandhi as saying “I think the government is not taking this threat seriously. Timely action is important.”
“When the government ignored it to host a crowd at the reception of US President Donald Trump in Ahmedabad, Congress again told the government about it on March 3 and 5. I am sorry that the government has again neglected it , Which reflects partisan politics. ”
Tharoor further said that the government was never in favor of constructive dialogue. He said, “I want to ask the government to recognize its mistakes and try to rectify it. There is still time for this.”
