In the Saif Ali Khan attack case, Mumbai Police on Wednesday conducted an identification parade for the main accused Shariful Islam Shahzad in Arthur Road Jail. According to police investigation, Shariful Islam Shahzad allegedly broke into Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra residence with the intention of robbery. However, he encountered the actor and during the scuffle, he attacked Saif with a knife.
Identification parade of accused Shariful Islam was held in jail
Staff nurse Eliamma Philip and house help Junu had reached Arthur Road Jail on Wednesday morning to identify Shariful, accused of theft and attack in Saif Ali Khan’s house, in the identification parade conducted in the senior jailer’s room. Shariful was also made to stand in front of both of them one by one along with other prisoners. The identification parade is held in the presence of the Tehsildar after taking permission from the court. Police or jail staff are also not allowed to be present during the identification parade.
According to media reports, the police said that they have strong evidence against the accused, including CCTV footage and a positive facial test. The parade was held in the presence of a tehsildar and five panchas, and in the process the witnesses examined around 10 persons, including the suspect. Reportedly, the physical features of these persons such as body structure, skin colour and height were almost the same. The identification parade took place a week after the accused was taken into judicial custody.
The accused’s facial recognition test was positive
On January 31, the Mumbai Police conducted a facial recognition test of the accused. Mumbai Police said, “The facial recognition test of the arrested accused Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad was positive. According to the test, the person seen in the CCTV footage and Mohammad Shariful Islam Shahzad are the same person.” A case has been registered against the accused under sections 311, 312, 331(4), 331(6) and 331(7) of the Indian Penal Code (BNS). The accused has been identified as a resident of Bangladesh. Reports claim that he was trying to flee to his native village, but was detained at Hiranand Estate in Thane.
