New Delhi. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday said that it has arrested A.K. Kathpal, a former Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer of the Indian Railways, who was earlier posted at the Integral Coach Factory, recovered Rs 2.75 crore in cash and 23 kg of gold in an alleged corruption case and during searches at nine locations. A 1984 batch IRSME officer Kathpal, who was earlier posted at ICF Perambur in Chennai, has been arrested for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50 lakh, a CBI spokesperson said.
The official said the CBI had registered a case against Kathpal, who had retired in March this year, and others, including private persons, on the allegation that the accused were involved in various activities while holding the post of Principal Chief Mechanical Engineer, ICF. was involved in Director of a private firm based in Chennai and connivance with unknown persons in the execution or execution of tenders in respect of Mechanical Division of ICF.
It was also alleged that Kathpal, during the period February 2019 to March 31, 2021, the date of his retirement, had taken bribes from a director of a private firm and others and used the services of Hansa Venugopal, the director, the CBI spokesperson said. did. Universal Engineering Chennai Pvt Ltd, as a conduit for receiving bribes on their behalf and also as a custodian to hold the alleged illegal gratification of Rs 5.89 crore received on their behalf.
It is also alleged that on Kathpal’s demand, Venugopal had arranged to pay Rs 50 lakh as the first installment of the total bribe amount kept in his custody.
The spokesman said that Kathpal was caught by the CBI while demanding and accepting Rs 50 lakh as the second installment of the bribe amount from the said private persons.
“Four other people have been detained in this case,” he said.
The CBI searched nine places in Delhi and Chennai as well as the premises of the accused, in which Rs 2.75 crore in cash and 23 kg of gold were recovered, the official said.
A CBI source said Rs 2.75 crore was recovered from the premises of Kathpal’s brother Sanjay Kathpal.
The source said that Sanjay used to take bribe on behalf of his brother.
