Dehradun. Brahmakund located in ‘Har ki Paidi’ or ‘Hari ki Paidi’ in Gangadwar Haridwar has been considered the most sacred place. It is said that after Goddess Ganga descended from heaven, she was welcomed by Brahma at this place. It is also believed that one of the four places in the earth where the nectar was spilled in the snarling between the Devas and Devas for the Amrit Kalash, which came out during the Samudra Manthan, was also the birthplace of Hara. Hence every devotee here wants to bathe once in their life. Bathing here is considered to be the most virtuous, especially during the Kumbh Mela to be held at a gap of twelve years.
Har ki Paidi or Brahmakund is the main ghat of Dharmanagari. From here, Ganga leaves the plains and moves towards the plains. This ghat was built by King Vikramaditya in memory of his brother Britthari (Bhartrihari). Bhartrihari had attained immortal status here by doing penance on the banks of the Ganges. In the memory of Bhartrihari, King Vikramaditya first built this tank and then the Paidi (ladder). By the name of Bhartrihari, these padi got the name ‘Hari ki padi’.
In the course of time, Hari Ki Paidi’s abortion became Hari Ki Paidi. It is also believed that in the Satyuga, King White worshiped Lord Brahma at the feet of Har. Pleased with this, Brahma asked him to ask for the desired groom. Then the king asked Brahmaji to boon that this place should get fame in his name. It is said that since then, Har ki Paadi is also known by the name Brahmakund.
It is said that Lord Shiva came here during the Vedic period and the footprint of Srihari is also inscribed on a stone (padi) here. Because of this footprint, this place is called Hari ki Paidi. The grand Ganga Aarti is held here in the dawn and dusk.

It is believed that by taking a dip in the feet of every one, the entire sins of the organism are washed away. Every year a large number of devotees reach here to complete the rituals like Mundan, Upanayana. During the Kumbh Mela every 12 years, the arena of Shaiva, Vaishnavism and indifferent cult reach here for the royal bath. To become a witness of this divine view, there is an influx of devotees from all over the country and abroad.
Abode of the three gods
Swami Divyeshwarananda says that Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh have been considered as the abode of the three gods in Har Ki Paadi. That is why ‘Hari ki Paidi’ is also called ‘Hari ki Paidi’ or ‘Brahmakund’. Har is synonymous with Shiva and Hari is synonymous with Vishnu, while Brahma himself became Brahma Dev. This is the reason why devotees from the country and abroad come here to take a dip of faith.
