The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was so impressed by his political clout that he was appointed as the President of the Youth Congress of the state in 1971. In 1971, he was elected on a Congress ticket and reached the Lok Sabha. He was elected as a member of the Lok Sabha a total of six times. Another incident comes up. It was in the year 1976, when Indira Jean imposed Emergency in the country. This was the time when Indiraji was the target of opposition. Not only this, the fragrances were loud behind the scenes even within the party. At that time Gogoi remained loyal to the top leadership, which he also received. He was appointed Joint Secretary of All India Congress Committee. Over time, his loyalty to the Congress leadership grew stronger due to which he never looked back in the political world.
The Assam Accord was signed in the year 1986 during Rajiv Gandhi’s government. After this there was an atmosphere of tension in Assam. Rajivji appointed Gogoi as the General Secretary of the Congress. On behalf of the Congress leadership, Gogoi was entrusted with the responsibility of reviving the party in Assam. This was the time when Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, the leader of the Asom Gana Parishad, had a strong hold in the province. In the year 1990, Gogoi strengthened his political ground with the formation of Congress. It was awarded to PV Narasimha Rao’s government Gogoi and he was the Union Minister from 1991-96 …
