The post has become vacant after the term of JDU Rajya Sabha member Harivansh Narayan Singh ends in the Upper House. Harivansh is again elected a member of the Rajya Sabha.

In the notification issued by the Rajya Sabha General Secretary, “The Chairman has fixed the date of September 14 for the election of the Deputy Chairman under Section 7 of the Procedure and Performance of the Council of States Rules”.
Nominations will be accepted by September 11
The election will be held on September 14 at three o’clock in the day. Nominations will be accepted by noon on September 11. A possible candidate has not been announced by the BJP or the NDA.
A strategic meeting of Congress will be held on September 9
The Congress and the UPA have also not officially announced the candidate’s name. However, this issue can be considered in the strategic meeting of Congress on Wednesday.
