New Delhi. It was on this day that India captain Rohit Sharma joined Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 12 years ago. Sharing thoughts on completing 12 years, he said that this journey has been very exciting and emotional for him.
After playing his first IPL for Deccan Chargers, on 8 January 2011 in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Punjab Kings fought to buy Rohit in the mega auction. Eventually, Mumbai managed to buy him. Since then Rohit has been their star batsman, under Rohit’s captaincy Mumbai Indians won five IPL titles (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020).
Many memories with veterans and youth
Rohit Sharma said, “I can’t believe it’s been 12 years at Mumbai Indians. It has been a very exciting and emotional journey for me. We have achieved a lot together with veterans and youth. In an official statement by the franchise, Rohit said, “Mumbai Indians is my family and I would like to thank my fellow players, fans and management for all the love. Looking forward to creating more memories for our Paltan.”
Most runs scored for MI
Rohit also won the player of the match award in the 2015 IPL final for scoring a 26-ball fifty against Chennai Super Kings. He is also MI’s highest run scorer with 4982 runs.
He is also the most capped player for Mumbai and has the second most number of wins in IPL as captain (81 wins from 143 matches), but after missing the playoffs in 2021, Mumbai won 10 matches in IPL 2022. Disappointingly finished last in the team event. Only four out of 14 matches were won in the league stage.
