Whenever there is talk of a strong villain in Hindi cinema, even today Lalita Pawar’s name is taken. She played the role of villain in many films, which was well received on screen. In this serial, he played the character of Manthara, who played an important role in sending Lord Rama to exile. Lalita Pawar was born on 18 April 1916 in Nashik. His father Laxman Rao Shagun was a big silk merchant. Lalita Pawar’s real name was Amba Laxman Rao Shagun. Lalita Pawar started acting in Hindi cinema at the age of 9. Initially, he worked for many silent films.
Lalita Pawar used to get Rs 18 as salary initially. He worked in silent films till 1935. After this he pulled himself out of silent films and acted in Himmat-e-Mard. In which she was seen speaking for the first time. Once upon a time on the set of the film with Lalita Pawar, who looked very beautiful since childhood, such an accident happened that changed her whole life.
Her co-actor Bhagwan Dada was supposed to give a slap to Lalita from the sets of the film ‘Jung-e-Azadi’, released in 1942, but that slap turned out to be quite loud. After which Lalita Pawar’s face and left eye were damaged. There was no improvement even after three years of treatment. After that she changed from heroine to villainous character. She played the role of an angry mother-in-law in the 1944 film Ramshastri.
People liked this role of Lalita Pawar. After this, he achieved great success with such characters in the 60-70s. People will always remember Lalita Pawar’s characters like the strict mother of ‘Junglee’, the banana seller in ‘Shree 420’, the sensitive maternal image of ‘Anand’ and Mrs D’Souza of ‘Anadi’. He acted in more than 700 films in his entire career.
Apart from films, Lalita Pawar had also made a lot of headlines on the small screen. In the 80s, he worked in Ramanand Sagar’s mythological serial ‘Ramayana’. In this serial, she played the character of Manthara, which was well-liked. Lalita Pawar had also won many awards for her brilliant performance. Lalita is also remembered as the first bikini girl of Bollywood.
