Lucknow. In elections, candidates spend money with both hands, it is often seen and heard, but when it comes to giving account of election expenditure to the commission, then all the crorepati candidates look ‘poor’. BJP candidate was at the fore in spending in the assembly elections, in which party candidate from Sarojininagar Rajeshwar Singh spent the most. Rajeshwar Singh has shown expenditure of more than Rs 19 lakh, which is the maximum amount spent by a candidate in nine assembly constituencies.
The commission has fixed the expenditure limit for the assembly elections at 40 lakhs. None of the 109 candidates from Lucknow spent even half of the fixed amount. Along with the nomination, each candidate had to open an account for campaigning and give a full account of all the money spent in the election. The commission has fixed the rates ranging from vehicles to chairs, tents and food items, so that the candidates can account for their expenses according to the same rate.
According to the details of the election expenditure given by the candidates with the commission, only the candidates of the ruling party are ahead in spending in all the assembly constituencies. Rajeshwar Singh spent the most while Jai Devi from Malihabad is at number two after spending 18 lakhs. BJP candidate Yogesh Shukla from Bakshi Ka Talab is also showing expenditure of more than 16 lakhs. According to Chief Treasurer Manoj Tripathi, the expenditure given by the candidates will be scrutinized. If any discrepancy is found, the commission will give notice.
