A massive fire broke out in the Buddhist Woolen Market inside Akbarpur Cold Graha in Shahzadpur, the twin city of Ambedkar Nagar’s city headquarters, late on Friday night. All the 27 shops that were engulfed in flames have been gutted. The loss is estimated to be more than two crores.
In the co-operative cold storage complex in Shahzadpur town, there was a Buddhist woolen market decorated with woolen clothes of Tibetans who came from other provinces during the winter. 27 shops in the market were decorated with woolen clothes. Around 11 o’clock in the night when the market was completely closed. Suddenly the flames started rising.
Within no time the entire market turned into a ball of fire. All the shops were burnt to ashes due to the fire. Police and fire brigade personnel reached the information and tried to control the flames, but without any success. It is said that when the market was closed, the power supply was also stopped.
The power supply was also switched off at the time of the incident, so the cause of the sudden fire is not known. Shopkeepers say that goods worth 9 to 10 lakh rupees were installed per shop counter. There has been a loss of about two crores in all the shops together. The exact cause of the fire could not be ascertained. Due to the destruction of everything due to the fire, the shopkeepers have been facing the crisis of livelihood and they have been forced to live under the open sky.

In the morning, in protest against the fire, affected shopkeepers of Himalayan warm clothes blocked the Akbarpur-Varanasi main road in front of the cold storage and staged a protest. The police who arrived later understood and quenched the jam. The aggrieved shopkeepers were demanding financial assistance from the administration and an inquiry into the cause of the fire.
