Rajesh Pandey, the railway engineer who brought the bride home after a lavish marriage about nine years ago, is now preparing to take seven rounds with the groom by becoming Sonia. She underwent long surgery about four years ago to become Sonia. After the change of gender, a long struggle had to be waged in the railways to get a new identity. Excited about the new life in the new year, Sonia said that now she has got rid of Rajesh’s name and every identity associated with it.
Sonia (formerly Rajesh Pandey) is posted as Technical Grade One in the Ijjanagar Chief Factory Manager’s Office. After the death of his father, Rajesh joined the railways on March 19, 2003 under compassion. The family has four sisters and a mother. In the year 2017, Rajesh became a woman by undergoing gender reassignment and she changed her name to Sonia. This is also the first case in the history of Railways for a male employee to become a woman.
An appeal was made to the Railways to change the gender
A unique case of Rajesh Pandey (currently Sonia) posted as Technical Grade-I in the office of the Chief Factory Manager of Ijatnagar came to light. After undergoing gender reassignment, she had appealed to the officers to register her as a woman in the records of the railways. As it is a unique and rare case, Ijatnagar Mandal sought directions from the General Manager’s Office of North Eastern Railway. The General Manager referred the matter to the Railway Board. Eventually, on the instructions of the Railway Board, the gender woman was registered with Rajesh and on the medical card.
Identification as a woman under gender dysphoria
The main factory administration, on the basis of the report of the medical board, has identified the woman under gender dysphoria i.e. desire for one sex from the other. In gender dysphoria it is often observed that some people have male mind in female body or female mind in male body. This is the result of hormonal changes.
Loved the makeup
Sonia said that she got a job in a workshop in Bareilly in 2003 under the deceased’s dependent quota after her father’s death. She always felt like a woman. She seemed to be a woman. She liked to dress up like a woman.
Rajesh’s relationship lasted for two years
The family had married Rajesh in 2012 with great fanfare. Husband and wife must have been together for six months, but they never came close to each other. Sonia says that this relationship lasted for only two years and then the wife got divorced.
Surgery performed in December 2017
Sonia explains that after getting divorced, she underwent surgery in a private hospital in Delhi and changed her gender. Since then, she had started struggling to get recognition as a woman.
