New Delhi. Today is the 125th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the great freedom fighter of India. On this occasion, while paying homage to Gandhiji in many corners of the country, on the other hand, some people in California of America witnessed an incident of sabotage with the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. India has raised a strong objection to this.
India on Saturday strongly condemned the vandalism with a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the city of Davis, California, and took up the matter with the US, seeking appropriate action against those responsible for this abominable act.
This statue of Mahatma Gandhi, gifted to America by India, was broken on January 28 in the city’s Central Park. The Foreign Ministry of India said on the incident that the Indian government strongly condemned this malicious and hateful act against universal respect for peace and justice. It was also said that the Indian Embassy in Washington has taken up the matter with the US State Department for a thorough investigation into the matter and has taken appropriate action against those responsible for it.
In a statement, the State Department said that the US State Department has informed that the vandalism action is unacceptable and hoped that the perpetrators would be brought to justice as soon as possible.
The Foreign Ministry said that the Consulate General of India in San Francisco has taken up the case separately with the City of Davis and local law enforcement officials, who have launched an investigation. The Foreign Ministry said the mayor of Davis expressed deep regret over the incident and informed that he had begun an investigation. The ministry said that local Indian community organizations condemned the act of vandalism.
