Washington Veteran Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi has been elected America’s House Speaker for the fourth time. He has said that this will be his last term. On Sunday, the 80-year-old Pelosi received the support of 216 Democrats, while two of his colleagues voted for someone else and three were not present in the vote, reported Xinhua.
On the other hand, Senator Kevin McCarthy from California received the votes of all 209 Republicans present in the House, so that he will also continue in his position as Minority Leader.
Pelosi was elected House Speaker for the first time in 2007. She is the first woman to be elected to this post. After this, she again came to this post in 2019.
The Speaker is the political and parliamentary leader of the US House. For the past 2 years, relations between the White House and Pelosi-led House were tense.
The chamber also launched an investigation against President Donald Trump on a complaint by a whistleblower in late 2019 but was later acquitted by the Republican-led Senate.
Pelosi was elected as the House Speaker on Sunday after being sworn in by the 117th US Congress.
