The central government has contracted with a private company here to manufacture the lightest bullet proof jacket. Currently, the bullet proof jacket being used in the army weighs 17 kg. According to the information received, now the 11 kg jacket made in Bhilai will be 40% cheaper in price with better quality.
Army will keep an eye on production
It is said that government and military experts will monitor the production of this bullet proof jacket. At present, most of the types of bullet proof jackets worn by the soldiers of the country are manufactured by a private company in Kanpur. Not only this, bullet proof jackets are also demanded for the army from Israel, England, France and Greece. Imports from China have been stopped under the slogan of Prime Minister Modi’s self-reliant India amid continuing tensions from China.
Silicon carbide will be used
Silicon carbide will be used in bullet proof jackets made in Bhilai. It is lighter than steel and many times stronger than it. Its use will further reduce the risk to soldiers. Currently, the government buys bullet proof jackets at the rate of 32 to 40 thousand rupees. The jacket made in Bhilai will be about 40 percent less price and its supply will be ensured only to the Government of India.
DRDO gave the technique of construction
This private company has got a production license after nearly three and a half years of effort. The jacket manufacturing technique is derived from the Defense Research Development Organization (DRDO). The company will supply more than one lakh jackets a year. Director of the company S. Subramaniam said that soon after getting the license, the governments of Pondicherry and Uttar Pradesh invited to set up production units at their own but they are setting up a production unit on 54 acres in Nandini, Bhilai.
