New Delhi. In December 2017, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested 82-year-old human rights activist Father Stan Swamy from his Ranchi home in the Bhima-Koregaon violence case near Pune. Officials said on Friday that Swamy would be taken to Mumbai. Pune Police and NIA officials have questioned Father Swamy twice in this case.
NIA officials said that due to contacts with the banned CPI (Maoist), he was brought to his house on Thursday evening for questioning and then arrested. He informed that Father Swamy would be taken to Mumbai where the agency would seek his remand from the designated court. He is the 16th person to be arrested in this case. NIA officials said that during the investigation it has been proved that he was actively involved in the activities of the CPI (Maoist).
The NIA alleges that the group’s activities with other conspirators – Sudhir Dhaval, Rona Wilson, Surendra Gadling, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonzalvis, Heni Babu, Shoma Sen, Mahesh Raut, Varvara Rao, Sudha Bhardwaj, Gautam Navlakha and Anand Teltumbde We were in contact for further development. The agency alleged that Swamy also received financial support through a colleague to expand the agenda. According to officials, he was also the coordinator of the Persecuted Prisoners Solidarity Committee (PPSC), an organization of the CPI (Maoist). NIA officials said literature, publicity material and other documents related to furthering the group’s programs have also been seized from Father Swamy.
Hours before the arrest, Swamy posted a video saying that the NIA was questioning him and that he had been questioned for 15 hours in the last five days. Swamy said in the video that he never went to Bhima Koregaon. The NIA received the responsibility of investigating the Bhima Koregaon case on January 24 this year.
