Chennai . The severely damaged lungs of a 48-year-old patient found to be coronavirus positive have been successfully replaced by doctors at a hospital in Chennai. The private hospital has claimed in its statement that this is Asia’s first known case of lung transplantation of a Kovid-19 positive patient. At the same time, there is a second lung transplant done in the hospital after the lockdown.
The hospital has said that Delhi’s Kovid-19 patient was suffering from a severe lung infection. His lungs were severely damaged due to Kovid-19-related fibrosis.
According to MGM Healthcare, the patient’s Kovid test came positive on July 8 and only a small portion of his lungs were functioning. She was put on ventilator support as the condition worsened. She was later airlifted from MGM Healthcare, Ghaziabad to Chennai on 20 July.
He was placed on ECMO support for over a month there. The doctors later decided to transplant her lungs. The transplant, conducted on 27 August, was led by Dr.K.R., Chairman and Director of Cardiac Sciences. Balakrishnan did.
MGM Healthcare stated, “The patient is well after the transplant and he is still in the ICU. His implanted lungs are doing well.”
