Prayagraj. In view of the increasing groundwater crisis, a team of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research- National Geographic Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI) Hyderabad is investigating the surface water present across the country. When the investigation team started investigation in the Doab area between Ganga and Yamuna, the extinct Saraswati river was found. Scientists are not yet fully considering it as Saraswati river, but early indications are that they will proceed with the process of its investigation. Along with the meeting of this river, the ground water level has also been investigated. The investigation also revealed that the water crisis has deepened in the area of Doab once full of groundwater. Scientists have also warned that if this is not taken care of in time, serious consequences will have to be faced.
Saraswati was discovered by some geologists in the past. But the form that has come out now, it was never found before. NGRI scientists said that from Prayagraj Sadar Tehsil area to Kaushambi’s Chail Tehsil area, Saraswati stream has been found till Manjhanpur and Sirathu. This stream is dry and instead of water there is sand. It is sand at a depth of several meters at many places. Scientists have taken samples of sand from many places out of the 45 km river found so far. This stream of the river was buried below the surface centuries ago. The buried river used to play a major role in groundwater recharge. Now water is not coming from the mountain in this river, but the rain water used to recharge the ground water through it. Scientists told on the basis of talks with the villagers that three-four decades ago there was no crisis of ground water in this area. Water was available within ten meters of the well. But now it is not so. Not only the wells are dry, hand pumps and tube wells also have to be reburied. Scientists told that due to indiscriminate exploitation of ground water, all the water which was in Saraswati river has dried up. At present, the investigation of the river is going on.
The river Saraswati is mentioned in the Rigveda. Saraswati had great glory in the Vedic period. It was considered a holy river. On its banks the sages composed the Vedas and spread Vedic knowledge. Hence Saraswati was worshiped as the goddess of learning and knowledge. Saraswati is mentioned in the river Sukta of Rigveda. In Brahmin texts, she is also called the goddess of speech. This river joins the Ganges and Yamuna at Prayag, since then it is also called Triveni. Now there is evidence of 45 km extinct river near Triveni. That’s why the talk of her being Saraswati is getting stronger.
