Kasganj. A new twist has emerged in the Kasganj case, in which the father of a 22-year-old man who was killed in police custody has now refused to give a clean chit to the police. Father Chand Mian had written a letter in the case of his son’s death, acquitting the police of all charges.
The note, written in Hindi, said that Altaf was in depression and ended his life by committing suicide.
Chand Miyan told reporters on Thursday evening that the officials had threatened him that his son’s body would not be handed over to him if he spoke against the police.
“I did what the police told me to do,” he said.
He said that he was illiterate and could not read what was written before putting his thumb on the letter.
He said, “I was not in good shape when I gave the statement and put my thumb impression without knowing what was written on the paper. Being in an unstable position, I did what the police asked me to do. ”
Kasganj Police declined to comment on Chand Miyan withdrawing his statement.
ASP Kasganj, A.K. Lion. Said, “Please ask the father of the deceased why is he changing his stand from one statement to another. What can the police say about this?”
Significantly, 22-year-old Altaf was called for questioning at Kasganj police station in a kidnapping case and died on Tuesday evening.
Police claimed Altaf was accused of eloping with a minor Hindu girl. He committed suicide in the washroom of the police lock-up.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) A.K. Singh said, during interrogation the accused went to the washroom of the police station, where he hanged himself.
Meanwhile, Altaf’s family has now appealed for a CBI probe into the matter.
Fatima, the mother of the deceased said, “How can a man commit suicide by hanging from a 3 feet high tap. We do not trust the post-mortem report, which has given ‘hanging’ as the cause of death.”
The postmortem report said that there were no injury marks on the body and death was caused by suffocation.
