New Delhi. After a humiliating 1-4 defeat in the five-match T20I series, Australia now have to play a three-match ODI series against the West Indies. The first match of the series is to be played in Barbados on 20 July. The command of the Australian team for this match has been handed over to Alex Carey. Alex Carey has become the 26th ODI International captain of Australia. Aaron Finch is injured and hence Carey has been given this responsibility in his place. Pat Cummins, the regular vice-captain of the team with Australia, has not come on this tour. In the last match of the T20 International series played in St Lucia, Finch has recovered from a knee injury on his right leg.
Along with Steve Smith and David Warner, Pat Cummins also withdrew from the West Indies tour and then the Bangladesh tour. Alex Carey said, ‘It is a big deal for me to lead the Australian team. Finchy is our captain and we will welcome him back when he is back. For now, I just hope I can make up for their shortfall.’ The team consists of players with less experience like Josh Phillippe, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith. The vice-captain of the Australian team will be announced before the match.
