Prayagraj. The controversy which was raised in the past over a tradition of burial of dead bodies on the banks of the Ganges in Allahabad, came an important order of the Allahabad High Court on Friday. The HC said that some castes have a tradition to bury dead bodies on the banks of the Ganges. With this, the court has dismissed the petition to stop the burial of dead bodies on the banks of the Ganges in Prayagraj and cremation of the buried bodies.
The Allahabad HC, while refusing to interfere on the PIL, clearly said that the petitioner has not done any research on the customs and practices of the last rites of the people residing on the banks of the Ganges. Therefore, this petition is dismissed and the petitioner can file this petition afresh after sufficient research.
This order of the Allahabad HC has come at a time when attempts were made to malign the country’s image internationally by making photos and videos of bodies buried on the banks of the Ganges viral on the Internet media. Along with this, it was also said about the buried bodies that all these deaths were from Corona, which had to be buried due to not being cremated. Ignoring the matter of tradition, questions were also raised on the arrangements of the state government through photographs of buried dead bodies. Dainik Jagran in its investigation found that the tradition of burial of dead bodies in hundreds of villages along the banks of the Ganges has been there for generations in many castes. There is also a cemetery of Hindus in Kanpur.
Hearing the petition, the court said that the petitioner should research and study the traditions and customs regarding funeral rituals in different communities along the Ganges. After this, a better petition can be filed afresh. A bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Yadav and Justice Prakash Padia heard the PIL filed by the petitioner Pravesh through video conferencing. In the hearing, Additional Advocate General Manish Goel argued on behalf of the government.
In a petition filed in the Allahabad High Court, it was demanded that a large number of bodies buried on the banks of the Ganges should be removed and cremated. Along with this, burial of dead bodies on the banks of the Ganges should be stopped. The court said that from perusal of the petition, it appears that the petitioner has not studied the traditions and customs of different communities.
Let us inform that the Division Bench of Allahabad High Court is monitoring the Kovid management. During this, the matter of burial of a large number of dead bodies on the banks of the Ganges was also brought to the notice of the court. The petitioner has made the basis of media reports, in which there was a demand for a high-level inquiry into the matter of burial of dead bodies. Due to the dead bodies, the river Ganga was feared to be polluted on a large scale.
