Bareilly. According to the incident, on being chased by the police here, a criminal shot himself with a country-made revolver. The incident took place in Faridpur area of Bareilly district on Saturday.
The police said that history-sheeter Ajay Singh was about to rob the house of a local timber trader along with two of his associates – Abhishek and Aanchal. Then a police team reached the spot and they were asked to surrender. Thieves van car which was parked in front of closed and empty house. Police personnel on patrol had earlier also found the same van standing on another deserted road and got suspicious.
Realizing the gravity of the matter, the police went inside the house and found Ajay Singh inside and asked him to lay down his weapons. The police claimed that Singh also fired at them and then fled to the neighbour’s house, after which the police also chased him. Fearing a police retaliation, he shot himself on the terrace.
Police said that Aanchal managed to escape in the van but Abhishek has been arrested. Aanchal was also arrested later. Two FIRs have been registered against the deceased Ajay Singh and his two associates under sections of the Robbery and Arms Act. However, Ajay Singh’s family alleges that he was shot by the police. But till now no official complaint has been lodged from their side.
Bareilly SSP Rohit Singh Sajwan has told that history-sheeter Ajay Singh shot himself with his country-made pistol after being surrounded by police and unable to find a way to escape. The team found him dead on the roof of a house.”
Additional SP (Rural) Rajkumar Aggarwal told reporters that, “Ajay Singh has several cases of dacoity registered against him in Bareilly. It is likely that he has taken this step due to fear of encounter.”
