new Delhi. The Center on Monday informed the Supreme Court that Vijay Mallya’s extradition has been raised at the highest political level, but the UK government has refused to share details of the confidential proceedings, delaying his extradition case. Justice U.U. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, before a bench headed by Lalit, said, “In December 2020, Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar raised this issue with Britain’s Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab and most recently in January 2021, India’s home The Secretary raised it before the Permanent Under Secretary of the UK Home Affairs. ”
Mehta said that in November last year, the Foreign Secretary of India had raised the issue of extradition of Vijay Mallya to Britain’s Home Secretary Preeti Patel, who replied that Britain’s legal complications were preventing Mallya’s speedy extradition.
Mehta said that the Indian government has been informed that some legal issues need to be resolved before Mallya’s extradition. Mehta said, “Under British law, extradition cannot take place until it is resolved. The matter is confidential, and you will understand that their government cannot provide any further information.” Mehta said this while citing the official UK response.
Mehta told the bench that Mallya’s extradition has been carried forward to the highest level and sought a stay on the case. The apex court has fixed the matter for further hearing on 15 March.
