new Delhi . All industrial units spread across 50 areas of Delhi have been directed to use piped natural gas (PNG) as fuel from 31 January next year. This step has been taken with the aim of improving the air quality of the city. Considering the fact that industrial areas are one of the major contributors to air pollution in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The Air Quality Management Commission has issued notices to about 1,644 industrial units operating in various areas of Delhi.
However a large number of industries are already using PNG. The Commission has now emphasized the use of PNG in all industries identified in Delhi.
The construction of pipeline network, measurement and associated infrastructure of Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) and Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) has been completed.
A statement from the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change said, “IGL, Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and the Government of Delhi were asked to work in close coordination with the industrial units so that all those identified in Delhi The target of converting industrial units to PNG units from January 31, 2021 can be met. ”
The DPCC was also directed to inspect and identify industries using non-compliant fuels and to take stricter punitive action in the event of non-compliance.
The air quality of the national capital is continuously deteriorating and the overall 373 air quality recorded by the Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR) system under the Ministry of Earth Sciences is in the ‘very poor’ category.
Safer said there is a possibility of cool cool breeze moving in the area and fog.
Safar said air quality is expected to be in the ‘very poor’ category till December 23 and 24. Especially in the morning.
According to Safar, concentrations of particulate matter (PM) with diameters of 10 and 2.5 μm in the air are at 379 and 215 levels, respectively.
