Lucknow . After introducing anti-conversion laws to curb forced conversions, the Yogi Adityanath government is now planning to abolish the incentive for inter-religious marriages for nearly 44 years. The Inter-caste and Inter-Religious Marriage Promotion Scheme has been in operation since 1976 and was launched by the National Integration Department in Uttar Pradesh.
Under this scheme, an inter-religious couple can apply to the District Magistrate within two years of marriage. After verification, the District Magistrate further sends the application to the Uttar Pradesh National Integration Department.
A government spokesperson said, “In UP, 11 inter-religious couples were beneficiaries of the scheme last year and each received Rs 50,000.”
This year, no amount has been released. The four applications that were filed are pending.
The spokesperson said that the scheme will be considered in keeping with the Uttar Pradesh Law Against Religion Conversion Prohibition Ordinance.
The ordinance was signed by Governor Anandiben Patel on Saturday. Ensures punishment on forced conversion through marriage or other means.
In 2017, the state government added a warning to the scheme – inter-religious couples could not convert after getting married, otherwise they would lose the incentive.
Uttarakhand, which adopted the scheme after its separation from Uttar Pradesh, is also planning to withdraw it.
Uttar Pradesh Minister Shrikant Sharma said, “The scheme exists for now. I cannot comment on its continuation. The ordinance means to stop forcible conversion and to hide those who identify themselves to cheat their partners.” To punish. “
