New Delhi. The British ruled India for almost 200 years. Something similar was also seen in the world of cricket when it took more than five decades, not a year or two, for India to win their first Test match on the soil of England. However, on this day in the year 1986, on June 10, the Indian team did what Indian cricket fans had been waiting for for almost half a century.
Actually, the series of Test cricket started between India and England in the year 1932. From 1932 to 1947, there was a team of Akhand Bharat, while after the year 1947, India became independent and became a separate team. In the year 1932, the Indian team toured England for the first time, where the team was defeated in a Test match series. This series of defeats went on for not one or two years, not one or two decades, but for 54 years.
The Indian team broke the pride of the British exactly 35 years ago today. Under the captaincy of Kapil Dev, the Indian team not only defeated the England team in the Test match at his home, but India also won the series in 1986. From 1932 to 1986, India played 32 Test matches on England’s soil, in which the team was successful in drawing 11 matches, but after losing 21 Test matches, the drought of victory could end.
On 10 June 1986, under the captaincy of Kapil Dev, India defeated England by 5 wickets in the first match of the three-match Test series. India won two matches of this three-match series and won the series 2-0. In this way, this series has the status of a historic series, because it was the first Test series victory of the Indian team on England soil, which is still alive in the minds of former players.
Talking about this match, the then captain of the Indian team Kapil Dev won the toss and elected to bowl and restricted England’s first innings to 294 runs. Graham Gooch scored 114 runs in this innings. At the same time, Derek Pringle was dismissed after scoring 63 runs. Chetan Sharma took five wickets for India and Roger Binny got three successes. Captain Kapil Dev also got a wicket.
At the same time, India scored 341 runs in their first innings and took a lead of 47 runs. Dilip Vengsarkar scored 126 and Mohinder Amarnath scored 69 runs for India. For England, Graham Dilly got 4 and Derek Pringle got 3 wickets. After this, the England team was piled up after scoring 180 runs in their second innings. Captain Kapil Dev (4 wickets) and Maninder Singh (3 wickets) did not let any Englishman survive.
In this way, India got a target of 134 runs to win their first Test on the soil of England, which India achieved with 5 wickets in hand. Dilip Vengsarkar scored the highest 33 runs in the second innings for India. Kapil Dev remained unbeaten on 23 and Ravi Shastri on 20. Graham Dilly took two wickets for England, but he could not stop India’s first win in England and Team India made history.
