Hapur An extortion racket has been busted in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. It used to blackmail people by threatening to implicate them in false cases of rape. Police said a male and a female Sangeeta (also known as Guddi) has been arrested following a complaint by a victim. The two suspects are Tania and Harkesh absconding.
According to reports, a person recently befriended a woman named ‘Mahi Rana’ on Facebook. After chatting online for a few days, the two agreed to meet at the location chosen by the woman on 15 September.
Upon reaching the stated location, the man realized that it was a trap. Four people, including two women, were waiting for him. The gang demanded Rs 5 lakh from the man for not implicating him in a false case of rape.
He panicked and gave Rs 1 lakh in cash, a gold chain and a ring. However, extortion did not stop.
Eventually, he contacted the police and two members of the gang were arrested.
A senior police officer declined to disclose further information, saying, “We believe a large gang is involved and we do not want to let the details go out at this time.”
