new Delhi. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a former deputy commissioner of the Central Indirect Tax Board (CBIT), a customs house agent and a businessman in a bribery case. A CBI official said on Tuesday that he has been arrested in a bribery case of Rs 1 lakh. Former CBIT Deputy Commissioner Mahesh Kumar Sharma, Custom House Agent Sunil Kumar and Manoj Dang, an importer of toys, have been arrested. The CBI officer said that he is accused of conspiring to illegally obtain a consignment of a toy, which was stopped by customs officials. The plot was tried using the personal effect of the retired Deputy Commissioner.
The CBI said it was also alleged that Sharma had demanded Rs 1 lakh from the other accused to use their influence in the customs department to get the toy consignment cleared.
The CBI arrested Sharma and recovered Rs 1 lakh from his car and the other two accused were also arrested for allegedly giving undue benefits.
The official said that the agency also searched the residential premises of the accused in Delhi, from where some documents have been recovered.
