new Delhi. The Supreme Court on Monday imposed a fine of one rupee on senior advocate Prashant Bhushan in the contempt of court case. The apex court found Bhushan guilty of contempt of court for tweeting against the judicial system. According to the verdict, Bhushan will have to deposit one rupee by September 15, else he will be sentenced to three months in jail. They may also be denied prosecution for three years for non-payment of fine.
On August 25, Judge Arun Mishra, B.R. Gavai and Krishna Murari had reserved their judgment on the sentence. Earlier, Bhushan refused to apologize to the court for his tweet.
While delivering the verdict, the Supreme Court said that everyone has the freedom to speak, but at the same time it is necessary to respect the rights of others.
The court said that Bhushan gave a lot of air to his supplementary statement and refused to apologize on his tweet. The court said that if Bhushan does not deposit one rupee as a fine, he may be banned from practicing for three years.
The court said, “What’s wrong with apologizing? Is this such a bad thing?”
During the hearing, the bench also gave Bhushan half an hour to consider his tweet for apology.
Advocate General K.K. Venugopal said that now the matter should be defused here and Bhushan should not be punished.
