New York. World No.1 tennis player Novak Djokovic of Serbia and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus won the men’s and women’s titles respectively in the finals of the Western and Southern Open played here. According to reports from Xinhua, Jakovic won his second title here by defeating Milos Raonic of Canada 1-6, 6-3 and 6-4 in the final played on Saturday.
This is Djokovic’s 23rd consecutive win in 2020. He is the only player in tennis history to have won all nine ATP Masters 1000 titles.
Djokovic also equaled World No. 2 Spain’s Rafael Nadal’s record of winning the title of 35 ATP Masters-1000 tournament. This is the 80th title of his career.
Djokovic said after the win, “It was not easy for me. The last three-four days were very difficult. It was really challenging for me to win the title by being mentally and emotionally stable.”
Azarenka was scheduled to face Japan’s Naomi Osaka in the women’s singles final, but Osaka withdrew from the match due to injury and Azarenka was declared champion.
Azarenka’s career is the 21st WTA title. Osaka defeated Belgium’s Alice Mertens in the previous match.
Osaka said, “I’m sad that I had to withdraw from this injury today. I had a hamstring stretch in my left arm and it didn’t even heal overnight, as I expected. It was an emotional week for me.” And I want to thank everyone for supporting me. ”
