Washington The US Defense Department Pentagon said on Thursday that China has increased its activities in the South China Sea by firing medium-range missiles. The United States is concerned with the decision of its military exercises, including testing of missiles in the region. China on Wednesday fired missiles into the area between southern Hainan Province and the Parcel Islands. These included a ‘carrier killer’ missile, which is capable of destroying an aircraft carrier. Analysts believe that the missile was developed with the intention of attacking American aircraft carriers.
The Pentagon said in a statement that China’s other activities, including missile testing, further worsen the situation in the disputed South China Sea. This military exercise is another example of China’s illegal claim over the South China Sea region. China had recently announced that it would conduct military exercises in the region from August 23 to 29, including missile testing. The Trump administration recently rejected China’s claims over much of this disputed maritime zone. China claims almost the entire South China Sea. This is opposed by the US and many regional countries.
