New Delhi Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy believes racism is an important subject that needs to be talked about and discussed openly to ensure that it can be eradicated from all walks of society.
The Black Lives Matter is receiving support from around the world and various sports personalities are supporting it after the death of black American citizen George Floyd in police custody in May this year.
Since the beginning of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement, Sammy has been talking to the cricket world to come forward for the movement and give his support on this issue.
Sammy said in an exclusive interview conducted by Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise Saint Lucia Jaoux, “If I have had a problem or my team is affected, I will stand up and speak about it. Some people are brave like others. Are not and therefore should be a voice for those who are, who cannot be strict. ”
He said, “I think this is a large-scale and an important topic that needs to be discussed because it is not about institutional or systemic racism. This is a case where people of color should be seen to We get racial slurs thrown in. We need to try to eliminate it because every human being deserves to be treated equally. ”
The former captain further said that the International Cricket Council (ICC) should focus on issues of racism apart from focusing on anti-corruption issues.
Sammy said, “I think there should be some education for this. I once said that the way the ICC emphasizes anti-corruption actions, the same kind of energy should also be channeled to anti-racism.” And educate players about racism. ”
Sammy had alleged that he was often called by his teammate ‘Kalu’ (Kala) while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2014 and 2015 seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
He said that he has recently understood the meaning of this racist word. He said that he agrees that the franchise never apologized to him about this.
Sammy said, “No, I don’t think there was any apology from the franchise. I don’t think the franchise had even seen it, but then it’s up to them. It’s a situation for me that I resolved And those who know me, if there’s a problem, I’m going to talk about it. But now I’ve moved on in my life. ”
The former all-rounder said, “I am a black man whom I am very proud of. And there is no way through which any human being can make me feel less proud than other human beings. I am not saying that Treat us at a high level but treat black people equally. Still we have to continue the fight against racism. “
