new Delhi. A Delhi court on Wednesday sent four-day police custody to Sharjil Imam, a research scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University, in connection with the February riots in the national capital. Sharjeel was arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police on Tuesday in connection with the riots. He was arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). He was brought to Delhi two days ago on a production warrant from Assam.
Delhi Police had filed an application for five-day custody of Sharjeel.
Under Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat allowed two statutory interviews with his client over five days on Sharijal’s plea of counsel.
During the court proceedings, Sharjeel’s lawyer Surabhi Dhar protested for seeking five days of police custody and requested the court to reduce the period of police custody.
He said that the accused was in judicial custody for a month before the riots took place in Delhi, so five days custody is not desired.
Delhi Police had on 25 July filed a charge sheet against Sharjeel for allegedly making inflammatory speeches during several protests against the CAA.
