Hyderabad The Telangana police on Saturday registered a case against controversial filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma in connection with his proposed film ‘Murder’ on the direction of a court. A case has been registered against Verma and producer Natty Karuna at Miryalaguda Town-1 Police Station in Nalgonda district.
The court directed the registration of the case on a petition by P. Balaswamy, whose son Pranay Kumar was killed in 2018 by his father-in-law Maruti Rao, who refused to accept his daughter’s marriage with him.
A case has been registered against Verma and the producer under Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code and other sections of the SC / ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act.
Balaswamy had approached the court last month and demanded a ban on the film. He had also said that photographs of Pranay and his daughter-in-law Amrita are being used without their consent.
Pranay (24) of the Dalit community was murdered in broad daylight in Miryalaguda on September 14, 2018, while he was on his way out of a private hospital with his wife and mother. The incident of sensational murder was many in CCTV cameras.
Upper caste Maruti Rao and seven others were arrested in this case.
Rao had given a betel nut worth Rs 1 crore for Pranay’s murder. He allegedly committed suicide in Hyderabad in March this year.
Varma announced last month that he was making a film on the story of Maruti Rao and his daughter.
Varma tweeted on June 21, “On the occasion of Father’s Day, I am launching the first look of the poster of a film, which is based on the story of Amrita and her ultra-loving father Maruti Rao.”
He had said, “This is a heart-wrenching story based on the story of Amrita and Maruti Rao about how dangerous a father’s love for his daughter can be.”
Amrita still lives with her in-laws and reacted sharply to Verma’s plan and resolved to fight a legal battle to stop the film.
