Virat Kohli did not play the first match against England due to a knee injury. It was a good thing that despite Virat not being in the playing XI, Team India won the match by 4 wickets. In the match, Gill played a match-winning innings of 87 runs, for which he was adjudged the Player of the Match. Meanwhile, a big update has come out on Virat Kohli’s fitness and his playing in the second ODI to be held in Cuttack.
Speaking to broadcasters after the match, Shubman Gill told that Virat Kohli had a swelling in his knee and he was feeling fit till the evening practice session the day before the match was played. Gill said, “When we woke up in the morning, we came to know that Virat had a slight swelling in his knee. He was feeling fit till the practice session last evening. He will be absolutely fit by the next match.” This is one of the few matches in Virat Kohli’s career when Virat has had to sit out of the playing XI due to injury.
Shubman Gill spoke on the change in batting order
Virat Kohli bats at number three in ODIs, but in his absence, Gill batted at number-3 against England. On the change in batting order, Shubman Gill said, “I bat at number three in Test matches, so it was not a big change for me, but yes the circumstances were a little different. If you are batting at number-3 and early wickets fall quickly, then they have to bat according to the situation.”
In the first ODI, while chasing the target of 249 runs, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal were out early. Jaiswal and Rohit, both were out by the score of 19 runs. In such a situation, Gill played an innings of 87 runs and saved India from defeat.
