New Delhi. The 3-Test series between Sri Lanka and England started on Wednesday. In the first Test being played at Emirates Old Trafford, Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first but was all out for 236 in the first innings. Dhananjay de Silva played the captaincy innings. By stumps on the first day, England had scored 22 runs in the first innings without losing any wicket. England is still 214 runs behind.
Sri Lanka’s bad start
Sri Lanka, who came out to bat first, also had a bad start and the team suffered three blows one after the other on the score of 6. Dimuth Karunaratne scored 2 runs off 18 balls. Gus Atkinson took his wicket. Opener Nishan Madushka was caught out on the first ball of the 7th over. He scored 4 runs off 16 balls. Angelo Mathews was out LBW on the last ball of the same over. Chris Woakes took 2 wickets in the same over.
Dhananjay de Silva hit 74 runs
After this, Kusal Mendis scored 24 runs in 34 balls, Dinesh Chandimal scored 17 runs in 40 balls and Kamindu Mendis scored 12 runs in 25 balls. Prabhat Jayasuriya scored 10 runs in 20 balls, captain Dhananjay de Silva scored 74 runs in 84 balls. He hit 8 fours in his innings. Milan Rathnayake also made an important contribution. He scored 72 runs in 135 balls. Vishwa Fernando was run out on a score of 13. Asitha Fernando remained unbeaten without scoring any runs.
Woakes-Bashir took 3-3 wickets
Chris Woakes and Shoaib Bashir took 3-3 wickets for England. Apart from him, Gus Atkinson took 2 wickets and Mark Wood took 1 wicket. In reply, England has scored 22 runs in 4 overs till the end of the day’s play. Opener Ben Duckett is present at the crease with 13 runs off 12 balls and Daniel Lawrence is present at the crease with 9 runs off 12 balls.
