The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made some changes in the rules of cricket. These changes are related to concussion substitute and stumping. According to the new rules, umpires will now only assess ‘side on replay’ for stumpings without considering catches behind the wicket during Decision Review System (DRS) referrals.
Let us tell you that these amendments in the rules have come into effect from December 12, 2023. If a team wants to take a referral for a catch behind the wicket during the stump out investigation, then it will have to take a separate DRS. Umpires will no longer check catches while checking stumpings.
Last year, during the series between India and Australia, Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey also used referral for caught behind the wicket after stumping without the team using DRS. However, now after the implementation of the new rules, only the footage from the side on camera will be shown in the appeal for stumping. The umpire will only look at that. He will not check whether the ball has touched the bat or not.
The ICC has also clarified the rules regarding taking substitute players for concussion (head injury). Now the replacement player will be allowed to bowl only if the original player has to withdraw due to ‘concussion’ while bowling. Along with this, the governing body of World Cricket has also fixed a time of four minutes for assessment and treatment of injuries on the field.
With these changes in ICC rules, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented the rule of ‘dead ball’ and two bouncers per over during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy last year in the Ranji Trophy starting from Friday. Have also decided to continue.
