On May 9, 2003, famous poetess Madhumita Shukla was shot dead in Paper Mill Colony, Nishatganj, Lucknow. There was a stir in the then BSP government due to this massacre. The investigation of this murder case was handed over to the CB-CID by the then Chief Minister Mayawati. After the post-mortem of Madhumita’s body, the body was sent to her home district Lakhimpur. Even during the CBI investigation, there were allegations of threatening the witnesses, so the case had to be shifted to the fast track court of Dehradun. The Dehradun court convicted all four, while giving benefit of doubt to another shooter, Prakash Pandey, acquitted. However, later the Nainital High Court found Prakash Pandey guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
