Gorakhpur. A fire broke out due to short circuit in Medicine Emergency Ward No. 14 at Nehru Hospital of BRD Medical College on Thursday night. Within no time, the smoke spread in the entire ward. Panic broke out among the patients and attendants. Immediately the rescue work was started by cutting off the electricity. The fire was brought under control with the help of fire department and equipment, but even after this the ward was filled with smoke. When the lights were switched on and checked inside the ward, four patients were found trapped, in which one respiratory patient had died due to suffocation.

Smoke started rising from the electrical board adjacent to the toilet of ward number 14 at 10 pm. The caretakers of the patients first tried to extinguish it, but when the fire started increasing, they informed the resident doctors and started running away with their patients. Seeing two-four people running away, all the attendants started running away with their patients. Within no time, the sensation spread throughout the campus. Management immediately swung into action and power was disconnected within 15 minutes.
Screaming in patients
Amidst the chaos, the patients started running and there was a hue and cry. Along with the number 14 ward, the patients and their attendants of the adjacent number 11 and 12 wards started running away. Burn and plastic surgery patients were admitted in ward no. All these wards became empty in no time. At around 12 o’clock in the night, under the leadership of surgeon Dr. Ashok Yadav, the college staff examined inside by turning on the lights of the ward and found four patients trapped, in which Akhand Pratap Singh of Khajuri village of Khajni had died of suffocation. He had respiratory problems. Other patients were shifted to another ward.
