Varanasi: The Varanasi MP-MLA court has convicted Mukhtar Ansari in the 32-year-old Awadhesh Rai murder case. The court of Special Judge (MP-MLA) Avneesh Gautam has also imposed a fine of one lakh along with life imprisonment to Mafia Mukhtar.
Hearing of the case in Varanasi and Prayagraj On August 3, 1991, Awadhesh Rai, elder brother of former MLA Ajay Rai, was shot dead in broad daylight outside his house in Lahurabir area. Ajay Rai had filed a case against Mukhtar Ansari, former MLA Abdul Kalam, Bhim Singh, Kamlesh Singh and Rakesh Justice regarding this massacre.
On completion of the hearing process, the court had fixed the date of June 5 for the decision in the said case. On the previous hearing in the pending trial in the court of Special Judge (MP-MLA) Avnish Gautam, the counsel for the main accused former MLA Mukhtar Ansari, Srinath Tripathi, presented his written arguments in 41 pages before the court.
The defense in its written arguments had raised questions on the claim of the prosecution regarding the time of the incident by the plaintiff’s case, another witness and the critic. On the other hand, Mukhtar Ansari, lodged in Banda Jail, has requested for security by giving an application in the court through his lawyer.
The court has been requested to summon the CCTV footage of the action taken by the administrative officers in the jail on May 19. Said in his application that the jail is no longer safe for me. Anything can happen to me.
