New Delhi. Part of the team on the New Zealand tour, opening batsman Shubman Gill has narrated an anecdote from his ODI debut, which proves how when MS Dhoni was in the team, he did not let the morale of any young player fall.
Gill did ODI debut in 2019
In 2019, Shubman Gill made his ODI debut against New Zealand. In that match, Gill was dismissed after scoring only 9 runs and the whole team was able to score only 92 runs, which the New Zealand team achieved by losing 2 wickets in just 14.4 overs. Gill, who scored 9 runs in that match, was very disappointed with his performance, then Dhoni went and encouraged him.
MS Dhoni encouraged
During a TV show, Shubman Gill recalled that day and said that I had scored 9 runs on my debut. I was disappointed early on but Mahi Bhai saw that I was sad. Then I was 19 years old, he said don’t worry at least your debut has been better than me, because on his debut he got out without scoring any runs.
He was run out and after that he sat there and told many jokes which made me feel very positive. A newbie like me could not have expected such a thing from him.
Currently Shubman Gill is running in excellent form. Talking about his ODI career, he has scored 579 runs in 12 ODIs, in which he has scored 1 century and 3 half-centuries.
Good chance on New Zealand tour
Team India is currently on New Zealand tour where they will play 3 T20 and 3 ODI series. In the absence of a senior player, Shubman Gill has the best chance to prove himself as the ODI World Cup is just next year and the race for a place in the team has already started.
