New Delhi. The West Indies team, who were knocked out of the first round of the ongoing T20 World Cup in Australia, has suffered another setback. In fact, the coach of the team, Phil Simmons, resigned from the position of coach. Talking about West Indies’ T20 World Cup 2022, where he defeated Zimbabwe’s team, he had to face defeat from teams like Scotland and Ireland. The team finished at the bottom of their group.
“I acknowledge that it is not just the team whose defeat hurts, but the proud nations we represent,” Simmons said in a statement released by West Indies Cricket on Monday night. “It’s disappointing and heartbreaking. We weren’t good at it and now we have to watch the tournament play-out without our participation. This moment is painful and I sincerely apologize to my fans and followers.
His second stint in coaching position began in October 2019, after an initial 18-month stint in which he helped West Indies win the 2016 T20 World Cup. During his tenure, the team produced some good results in Tests and ODIs as well. Earlier this year, the series was won over England and Bangladesh. But he had to go out early this time in the T20I World Cup 2022.
West Indies lost four out of five games in 2021 and two out of three in Australia last week.
Series against Australia will be the last assignment
Simmons will remain in charge for the upcoming two-Test series against Australia, which starts on 30 November at the Optus Stadium in Perth. He said that he will also be involved in the brainstorming regarding West Indies cricket to be out of the World Cup. “For me personally, this decision is a step that I have been contemplating for some time,” he said.
