Sri Lanka won by an innings and 39 runs in the second innings, bowling Australia out for 151 on the basis of 6 wickets from Prabhat Jayasuriya.
Batting first, Australia scored 364 runs in the second match of the series being played against Australia. In reply, Sri Lanka crossed this score to 554 runs due to the strong innings of Chandimal. Captain Dimuth Karunaratne contributed 86 runs and Kusal Mendis contributed 85 runs. Due to the belligerent innings of these players, the team lagging behind in the series took the lead.

In difficult times for the team, Chandimal played an important innings and scored the first double century of his Test career. The batsman, who completed 50 runs in 103 balls with the help of 5 fours and 1 six, completed the century after playing 195 balls, scoring 8 fours and 1 six. Chandimal, who returned unbeaten on 118 on the third day, touched the 150-run mark in 281 balls with 12 fours and 1 six. After playing 316 balls, he scored the first double century of his career with the help of a total of 5 sixes with 16 fours. Chandimal returned unbeaten after scoring 206 runs.

Chandimal has become the Sri Lankan batsman to play the biggest Test innings against Australia. Former captain Kumar Sangakkara scored 192 runs in the Hobart Test, which was the biggest innings ever. Chandimal made this big record by making a double century. Kusal Mendis, who played an innings of 176 runs in Pallekal, comes after this.
