Lucknow. Former minister of Samajwadi Party government and MLA from Rampur, Mohd. Azam Khan’s troubles are not taking the name of lessening. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has started investigation by registering another case in Jal Nigam recruitment scam on Azam Khan, who was released on bail after spending nearly 27 months in jail. The ED has also sought a detailed report from the Jal Nigam on several points.
The Lucknow Zone Office of the ED has registered a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on the basis of the chargesheet of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the State Police in the Jal Nigam recruitment scam. In the chargesheet of the SIT, Azam and some other officers including the then MD of Jal Nigam have been charged.
SP leader Azam Khan was at that time the Minister of Urban Development as well as the Chairman of the Jal Nigam. In the matter related to the recruitment, he had given approval as the chairman of the Jal Nigam. However, in the statement recorded before the SIT, he had held the then officials responsible for the disturbances. Despite this, the SIT had filed a chargesheet in the court assuming his involvement in the recruitment scam.
The ED has sought information about the officers who were posted on key posts in the Jal Nigam during the recruitment process. This recruitment scam happened in the year 2016 during the SP regime. At that time, there was a massive disturbance in the recruitment of 1342 posts of Assistant Engineer, Under Engineer and Clerk in Jal Nigam. Later, on the orders of the High Court, the state government handed over the investigation of the case to the SIT.
After being found guilty in the investigation of the SIT, the government had approved the investigation by registering a case against Azam Khan and other officers. After investigation, the SIT filed a charge sheet against all the accused in the court. The ED is already probing Rampur’s Jauhar University, enemy properties and illegal occupation of government land. The case against Azam in these cases was registered in the year 2019 itself.
