New Delhi. Indian Test captain Virat Kohli has resigned a day after the three-match Test series defeat against South Africa. Virat Kohli, India’s most successful captain in Tests, was expected to continue to lead the Indian team in red-ball cricket for a long time as he was relieved of the captaincy of the T20 and ODI team. After the end of the Test series against South Africa, Kohli decided to step down as the Test captain and announced it via social media.
Under the captaincy of Virat Kohli, India won every home Test series and lost in only two Test matches of this team at home. Under Kohli’s captaincy, India won the Test series in Australia and England and took a 2-1 lead in the five-match Test series against England. However, Kohli could not win the Test series in South Africa and New Zealand. Under Kohli’s captaincy, India lost both the Test series in Rainbow Nation, while the Kiwi team also eliminated India.
According to Sunil Gavaskar, the defeat in the overseas series might have been the reason for Kohli’s resignation. Speaking to India Today, the ICC Hall of Famer said that he was not surprised by the former captain’s announcement and that Virat Kohli is in danger of being sacked after the overseas series loss. He said that I am not surprised by Kohli taking such a step. I thought he would probably do such a presentation during the ceremony, but it happened after a day.
Gavaskar said that as a captain, I have experienced that series defeats abroad are not taken very kindly by the Board and the cricket loving public or the officials of the Board. Virat Kohli was also in danger of being sacked from Test captaincy after the loss in the Test series against South Africa. It has happened in the past and I am sure it could have happened this time as well because it was a series India were expected to win easily.
