New Delhi. Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin spoke about the challenges Indian wicket-keepers face against spin bowling and who according to him is the best Indian wicket-keeper against spin bowling. The unpredictable bounce and turn in India makes it one of the toughest tasks for a wicketkeeper. Ashwin talks about India’s three wicket-keepers.
However, according to Ashwin, some of the wicket-keepers have done exceptionally well against the spinners. Dinesh Karthik, Wriddhiman Saha and MS Dhoni are among them. Ashwin acknowledged the scintillating skills Karthik and Saha possessed, but picked former skipper MS Dhoni as someone who often made wicketkeeping easy in tough conditions.
R Ashwin said, “Dhoni, Saha and DK (Dinesh Karthik) – in that order you can take answers. It is very difficult not to keep them behind the wicket.” Ashwin also appreciated Dinesh Karthik’s efforts, but decided to keep Dhoni at the top of the list and said, “I have played a lot of cricket with Dinesh in Tamil Nadu, but if I have to pick one, I think That really MS Dhoni is the best behind the stumps.”
He also gave an example of why Dhoni has been kept higher by Ashwin in his list. Describing Dhoni’s talent behind the stumps, Ashwin referred to Ed Cowan’s stumping on the first day of the Chennai Test, where Dhoni executed the batsman’s stumping effortlessly. He said, “This is a wicket from Ed Cowan in Chennai, where he walks out and gets stumped. The ball didn’t turn, but bounced, and MS Dhoni collected the ball and stumped it. I hardly did. One must have seen him miss something, be it stumping, run out or catch. He is one of the most exceptional wicketkeepers against spin. Saha is also not far behind.
