New Delhi. Team India’s head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar are ending their tenure after the upcoming T20 World Cup. Virat’s troubles are about to increase. The BCCI wants to make former India leg-spinner Anil Kumble as the head coach of Team India once again and for this it is preparing to contact him. In the year 2017, Kumble had announced his resignation as the head coach of Team India. Then the news of the rift between him and Kohli came to the fore in the media reports. Virat Kohli announced on Thursday that he would step down from the captaincy of the Indian team after the T20 World Cup 2021.
After Kumble stepped down as head coach four years ago, Kohli had backed Ravi Shastri to replace him. The Indian Express reports that ways are being explored to bring back Kumble following the recommendations of the panel mandated by the Supreme Court. With Kohli relinquishing the T20 captaincy, the BCCI is convinced that the team needs a new coach. In a press release after Kohli’s resignation on Thursday, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had said that the board has a clear roadmap for Team India.
It is believed that the current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly wanted Kumble to continue in the post in 2017 despite Kohli’s differences. At that time he was a member of the Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) of BCCI. Kumble was appointed as the coach in June 2016. India reached the final of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy under his coach. Team India had to face defeat against Pakistan in the final. Kumble is currently the head coach of the IPL franchise Punjab Kings. Before contacting Kumble, the BCCI is also believed to have contacted former Sri Lanka captain and current Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene.
However, Jayawardene is interested in coaching the Sri Lankan team and the IPL franchise. According to the new constitution of BCCI, no person can hold two posts at a time. If Kumble agrees to come on board, he will have to give up his IPL assignment. Kumble is also the head of the Cricket Committee of the International Cricket Council. After Kumble became the coach in the year 2016, a few days later, differences between Virat and him started to emerge. In his resignation letter, Kumble expressed surprise that Kohli had objections to his style.
