Uttarkashi. Most of the agricultural land in the mountainous region depends on rain for irrigation. That’s why the women of the mountain know the importance of every single drop of rain. Because women are the main backbone of farming. These women include Atra Devi of Dunda village in Uttarkashi and Ganga Rana of Bhadkot village, who are motivating the villagers for rainwater harvesting. Due to this, the picture of their villages is also changing. Agricultural Science Center Chinyalisaud gave technical support in this campaign.
In 2013, experts from Krishi Vigyan Kendra arrived in Dunda village of Dunda block. Then 65-year-old Atra Devi of Dunda village presented the problem of water for irrigation to the officials of Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Experts at the center suggested techniques for collecting rainwater. Atra Devi made the women of the village aware. Built polythene tanks and other small tanks to collect rain water. Atra Devi says that four families in the village prepared a pit at one corner of the farm at her behest. The polyethylene was provided by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra to store water in that pit. In the rain, water from the roof and courtyard of the house collects in this polythene tank.
Even today, this water is being used in rural vegetable production. If there was successful use of rain water in Dunda village, where would the women of Bhadkot of Chinyalisaur block stay behind. There is also a problem of irrigation water in Bhadkot village. Here, as in Dunda village, rain is the only means of irrigation for farming. Ganga Rana of Bhadkot, with the support of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Chinyalisaur, inspired the villagers to save every drop of rain. In the year 2019, Panchama Devi, Bhavani Devi and Sarita Devi of Bhadkot village built polythene tanks for rainwater harvesting and started farming horticulture. Ganga Rana happily formed a self-help group to collect rainwater and cultivate cash crops.
You added Sushila Devi, Sheela Devi, Gyanna Devi, Sarojini Devi Devaki Devi and Mala Devi along with you. Ganga Rana built polythene tanks in her farm and Sushila Devi’s farm during the Corona period, which led to mass farming. Improvement in cash crop production Ganga Rana, educated till graduation, says that with the use of rain water, he has sold cabbage of thirty thousand rupees, pumpkin worth 50 thousand rupees, cucumber of 40 thousand rupees.
Similarly, okra, Staberi, Cauliflower, Capsicum, Rye have also been well produced. Now all the women of his group are making polythene tanks to collect rain water, so that there is no problem in irrigating the cash crops. Cash crop production has also improved due to the convenience.
Dr. Chitrangad Singh Raghav, Head of the Center for Agricultural Sciences, says that Dr. Chitrangad Singh is the easiest way to collect rainwater. It only costs digging pits and polythene. This tank is manufactured for a very small amount of money. This rainwater is suitable for irrigation.
