Prayagraj. Allahabad High Court will now hear on May 13 the appeal filed against the sentence given to BSP MP from Ghazipur Afzal Ansari under the Gangster Act. Meanwhile, Krishnanand Rai’s son Piyush Rai has filed a criminal revision to increase the punishment. Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh has ordered simultaneous hearing of both the appeals.
MP-MLA Special Court Ghazipur has sentenced Afzal to four years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh. The Supreme Court has ordered to dispose of the appeal filed against it by June 30, 2024.
A case under Gangster Act was registered against the petitioner in Mohammadabad police station of Ghazipur for the murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai. In this, the special court has found Afzal guilty and sentenced him. Earlier the High Court had approved the bail but did not stay the sentence.
Due to this, Lok Sabha membership was abolished, however later the Supreme Court stayed the sentence and ordered the appeal to be heard soon. Due to this the membership was reinstated. On Thursday, the court was told that the state government has also filed an appeal to increase Afzal’s sentence.
